What to do if you've been in a car wreck

Most people don't expect to be hurt in a car wreck. However, it's important to plan ahead, so you can be prepared to protect your interests in the event of a car wreck. It is critical to preserve evidence before it is lost or destroyed. You or your attorney should take the following steps as soon as possible:
  • Photograph all visible injuries. Make sure to get additional photos as your condition progresses.
  • Video of hospitalization (if possible)
  • Hire expert witness/accident reconstruction expert to inspect and document accident scene while the evidence is still fresh and available
  • Photographs of damage to vehicles or other involved items;
  • All receipts or bills (auto repairs, medical expenses, lost wages, precriptions, etc)
  • A journal of events, including how the wreck has affected your daily lifestyle.
Contact an attorney as quickly as possible to make sure your legal rights are protected. If an insurance agent contacts you, make certain you let them know you have spoken to an attorney. They should stop contacting you directly at that point, and make contact with your attorney.
